[21 October 2026] 2026 Taiwan Arbitration Week: “Global Supply Chain Challenges and the Development of International Dispute Resolution Mechanisms” – Talk by Prof. Dr. Stephan Wilske
Today, our students (including exchange students from abroad), led by Prof. Kao, participated in an insightful seminar hosted at the Chinese Arbitration Association (CAA) in Taipei during the 2026 Taiwan Arbitration Week. The event brought together distinguished legal practitioners, arbitrators, and scholars to address critical issues in cross-border trade and commercial dispute resolution.
The highlight of the event was a keynote presentation delivered by Prof. Dr. Stephan Wilske, a highly prestigious German international arbitrator and practitioner from Gleiss Lutz. Addressing the topic of "Global Supply Chain Challenges and the Development of International Dispute Resolution Mechanisms," Prof. Dr. Wilske provided an authoritative analysis of modern supply chain risks. Using the March 2021 Ever Given Suez Canal obstruction as a textbook case, he illustrated how a single point of failure held up US$9.6 billion in goods daily, impacting approximately 12% of global trade. He posed fundamental questions on risk allocation and resolution mechanisms while weaving in ancient philosophy, referencing Laozi’s wisdom: "Respond to all changes with constancy" ("以不變應萬變"). The session was followed by an engaging panel discussion on cross-strait mediation and arbitration practices.
For our international students, participating in this seminar offered an extraordinary learning experience. It enabled them to bridge academic legal theory with practical international arbitration in East Asia. Listening directly to a world-class legal authority expanded their global perspectives, enriched their knowledge of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and highlighted Taiwan's vital role in supply chain governance. We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities that foster cross-cultural dialogue and academic growth
